Automatic Transfer Switch

Tailored Power Distribution for Critical Applications

Automatic transfer switches offer a direct and immediate switching between utility (main) and supplementary or standby power sources. These devices are ideal when used in combination with a tap box setup and a generator, and offer a business an easy and safe means of maintaining access to reliable power during an unexpected outage or planned mechanical maintenance and testing.

In the event of a loss in power, the switch will automatically detect power loss and immediately switch to auxiliary power. Automatic transfer switches offered by Salient come in ranges from 200–5000 amps, and are ideal for hospitals, manufacturing, gas stations, data centers, fuel centers, hospitality, educational facilities, and more.

All products are UL1008 labeled. Available UL Type enclosures include the UL Type 1, UL Type 3R, and UL Type 4X, suitable for indoor, indoor and outdoor, or both with added corrosion resistance respectively. Products can be service entrance rated or non-service entrance rated accordingly.

For any unique or special requirements to your transfer switch, Salient Power offers an option and solution. We’re well-versed in custom fabrication and meeting the needs of our client’s. Call or contact us online to connect with our experts right away.

Automatic Transfer Switch Product Usage

Automatic transfer switches are particularly valuable for businesses that can’t handle any interruption in power. Due to the less than a second recovery time, ATS products are ideal for handling the power needs of vital tools and equipment, including heating and cooling, safety equipment, supply storage, lights and security systems, and tools that undergo routine servicing and maintenance.

All products come with a range of available accessories, including testing kits, additional Cam-Lok® cables, mounting hardware, and ideal supplementary and complementary products (such as tap boxes and safety switches).

Automatic Transfer Switch FAQs

Are automatic transfer switches safe?

Yes, automatic transfer switches are quite safe, as long as they’re sized and configured properly for your application. During a blackout, they disconnect from the utility grid and transfer connected loads to a standby generator without back-feeding power into the utility lines. Back-feeding can pose a threat to any technicians that would be servicing those lines during a blackout.

To ensure the safety of your building and personnel during power outages, calculate the total current draw of the loads that will be connected to the transfer switch and choose a switch that has a higher amperage rating than the total of those loads. Adding headroom for inductive motor startups and future growth is also a good idea, so choosing a switch with 150% to 200% of your total loads would be ideal.

At Salient Power Solutions, we can help you select the best automatic or manual transfer switch for your needs and budget.

How much do automatic transfer switches cost?

The cost of an automatic transfer switch will depend on several factors, including:

A basic two-way transfer switch will cost less than a dual-purpose or three-way transfer switch, while those for three-phase power will be more costly than those for single-phase power. Likewise, as amperage rating increases, so will the cost due to the heavier bus bars and other components required to carry the extra current.
