This product is used to transfer power from a standard source to an alternative, or to instantly switch from one load circuit to another. The design of a double throw safety switch interlocks two switches with a common connection, making it impossible for both switches to be closed simultaneously. This replaces the older solution of paired manual switches connected by a bar to prevent simultaneous activation.

Double throw safety switches are a favored choice when connecting a portable generator or similar backup power source to your existing wiring, due to ease of use, reliability, safety, and convenience. Many pieces of equipment used in managing alternative power and backup power sources, such as manual transfer switches, are simply more specific versions of double throw switches.
