Eaton Magnum Manual Transfer Switch Installation

You’ll need to solidly mount the enclosure unit on a flat, rigid surface, avoiding any moist, hot, or dusty surface or using a special enclosure design (NEMA Enclosure) built for your transfer switch environment. Take care to avoid installing your transfer switch too close to pipes, wires, and other potential hazards. Proper clearance for access to cables and general safety are critical, so confirm the dimensions of your enclosure in advance.

You’ll want to position the enclosure with the lift brackets after removing access panels, then bolt the switch into place, tightening nuts to approximately 50 lbs. Make sure to check for any leftover packing material at this stage.

Before installing any power lines, check line and load cables for compliance with relevant electrical codes. Verify current and voltage agreement. Create openings for cables as needed, taking care to prevent contamination of the transfer switch components with metal filings.

Test your power cables in advance, then strip insulation and prepare the termination end. Use an appropriate joint compound if using aluminum conductors. You’ll need to refer to the supplied wiring diagrams for the specifics of wiring your transfer switch.

Testing & Troubleshooting

Testing of your transfer switch equipment should take place shortly after the initial installation to ensure complete mechanical and electrical function and identify problems early. After the initial test, follow ups should be performed according to whatever schedule your generator set recommends.

Specific troubleshooting options will vary between models and configurations, but generally, you’ll want to begin by confirming system voltage and looking for burned or otherwise compromised components, then proceed along your wiring checking voltage between terminals and equipment until you identify the problem area.

Eaton Magnum Manual Transfer Switch Maintenance

A transfer switch is generally designed to be low-maintenance equipment, but the importance of successful function makes it nonetheless important to maintain a proper schedule of equipment upkeep. Eaton’s recommended maintenance procedure:
